Design starts with site selection: In the best of worlds, site orientation, primary views, and location for building on the site should be taken into consideration when purchasing a lot or parcel. In this way, it's possible to create a final product that meets the client's expectations for living.

Design to the environment: While many designers cater to the “fashionable” ideas of the day, newhaven is traditional, believing there are certain classic ideas that do not change with time, but remain comfortable within the environment in which it is placed. newhaven strives to design a home scaled in such a way that it comforts and embraces the souls within. 

Design for living: Through attention to detail, exterior massing, and interior function and flow, a style is created for each client that runs consistently through the design elements of the home. Each decision should enhance living.

In order to create a custom home, a room by room analysis needs to be done to ensure that a client's patterns of use are fulfilled. Starting with an initial meeting, this programming information is collected along with pertinent information about the site, surroundings, and orientation. Schematic designs are then developed and presented in a second client meeting and enhanced or finessed to a final plan through the interaction between client and newhaven. The closing phase of all projects bring the drawings to the permit/bidding/construction level.
