Problem:

An oddly configured, central Kitchen did not meet the needs of an Owner who frequently entertained large groups of people. Certain structural members of the Kitchen interrupted the view of the Bayou. And though the Owner did not initially understand the need to do so, newhaven encouraged the Owner to create access to the common Bathroom;

Problem (continued):

the existing route required guests to travel through the Wine Room or the Guest Bedroom in order to use facilities. With the Owner's expressed desire to cook and entertain, it did not seem practical to remodel without improving this necessary element.

Solution:

To improve the efficiency of the Kitchen, a modified galley handles the preparation/clean-up and cooking areas on one side and the sink/dishwasher/recycling activities compose the opposite counter. Each counter area has a large opening at which an extended bar top has been created to seat visitors opposite the cook; this allows the entire group to be engaged in conversation without compromising the movement of the cook.

The refrigerator is located at the end of the galley with lay down counter space on either side. The oven/warming drawer/microwave wall unit are also on this wall which takes them out of the main work area but is still very accessible to the galley.

Roll-out pantries provide ample storage for dry food items while throughout the Kitchen, storage was increased and is now available at point of use.

In order to provide access to the common Bathroom, a Bedroom closet was removed and the resulting hallway was created with built-in Linen Storage along one wall. A window provides natural light at the end of the hall; it is flanked by built-ins with a window seat built-in below.

To create a new Guest Bedroom Closet, an existing pantry at the Rear Hall was opened into the bedroom. To create a more private Guest Room, door access to the Garage was removed.
